Seasonal Anime Reviews: Summer 2022

I watched quite a few shows this seasons, and plan to watch more this fall 2022, anyways, here are the reviews.

Dragon quest dai no daibouken

Dragon quest dai no daibouken

Dai crying

Will the heroes survive and finally triumph? Find out next time!

Dragon Quest Dai no Daibouken has had some intense conflict this season, but it still decides to drag onto another season. Next season will, hopefully, finally allow us to see the thrilling conclusion of Dai’s adventure.

Devil is a Part-timer Season 2

Devil is a Part-timer Season 2

Alas Ramus

Where do I begin? Right off the bat, you get treated with a new art style, which would be alright, if it were not so jarringly bland and different that it didn’t make you go “Wait, is that supposed to be the main character?” It’s that off putting, makes characters unrecognizable, until you get used to it and figure out who is who. The animation is also pretty horrendous at times, which adds to this disappointment. The music is unmemorable.

Devil is a part timer season 2, tries to tell the story of devil is a part timer, outside of WcDonalds. To add to this new setting, they’ve also added a new member to the cast, Alas Ramus, an annoying baby, who thinks Maou and Emi are her parents, causing some kind of romantic drama to the situation. This gives Emi a bigger role this season, which is great if you are a fan of her, but otherwise, not great. The characters all seem to be dull versions of themselves, and Ashiya and Urushihara are not as comedic as they were in the first season. The new setting, combined with this babysitting plotline, doesn’t go over well, especially with a notable lack of humorous hijinks and other comedy. Maybe they are attempting situational comedy with the baby situation, but the jokes are not landing.

Other anime have managed to make better recoveries before, in the situation of a new art style being introduced. Even Highschool DxD, yes, Highschool DxD, has made a better new art style comeback than this. Highschool DxD hero, while being a somewhat standard Highschool DxD season, manages to entertain, with a fun school trip plotline. Even with a mundane plotline, such a standard school trip plot, manages to entertain, it also helps that the art style change wasn’t a change to a more bland style, but rather a somewhat unique one.

Highschool DxD art style comparison
The og highschool dxd artstyle is gorgeous and iconic, especially the way they draw Rias’ hair, but this new “fluffy” art style is nice too.

Devil is a part timer season two was a huge disappointment, I have not even finished it in full, at the time of writing, and I already know, it’s not going to be worth it. Sorry, Devil is a part timer.

Isekai Ojisan

Isekai Ojisan

Isekai Ojisan and sega

Really fun show, where the protagonist’s uncle wakes up from a coma, and it seems during that coma he was really isekai’d into a generic rpg isekai world. He wakes up from the coma wondering if sega has won the console wars, comedy ensues. I think it’s a good, entertaining show, and I enjoy the humour, while also wondering if the show is sponsored or owned by sega (sega references constantly). The show does not release weekly, it seems, so it has not finished airing yet, as of typing this.

Jashin-Chan Dropkick X!

Jashin-Chan Dropkick X!

Miku in dropkick on my devil.

So when she appeared, and continued to appear as a reoccurring character in all of the episodes, I was shocked. I had heard from various anime news headlines that Miku would be appearing in an anime, “Miku is finally an anime character after all!” type of things, but I did not read what show, assumed it would be something new, and not the newest season of Jashin-chan Dropkick, but it was a pleasant surprise.

The show is usual Jashin-Chan Dropkick hijinks, with a focus on traveling through various regions of Japan, it must have been sponsored by tourism, if not, equally funny.

The opening for this season has a part that reminds me of the nichijou opening.

Rent-a-girlfriend Season 2

Rent-a-girlfriend season 2

Chizuru with a churro

The Second season of Rent A Girlfriend was filled with wholesome fun episodes. With a focus on Chizuru’s budding acting career, with fun dinner dates, amusement parks, workplace fun thrown in. I’m not a fan of the black haired one (I forgot her name), but developments made with her were still okay to watch. Can’t decide whether I hate her or Mami more, but anyways! While the season was a little less strong than the first, it was still pretty standard stuff for this kind of show. Just as this season started airing, some stuff allegedly happened in the manga that made people hate rent a girlfriend. I am ignorant to this, so I still enjoy the show with bliss. I suspect some people are just hating on rent a girlfriend because of the kind of show it is, and they just realized it’s like that? A bunch of people who were new to anime in 2020, because of being stuck in doors because of the pandemic, decided to watch rent a girlfriend that year, so I suspect it is that crowd that is now becoming sick of the series, as it is just a standard romcom drama harem anime, and not something of substance, like their usual netflix shows. Anyways! I enjoyed the season, despite worrying something bad would happen, as manga readers have been saying.

Soredemo Ayumu wa Yosetekuru

Soredemo Ayumu wa Yosetekuru

Soreayu box

I decided to watch this because the art style looked nice. The show attempts romance, with barely memorable characters. I wish I had nice things to say, but this was definitely one of the most disappointing shows this season. It’s not terrible, but it’s not great either. Ayumu has a crush on Urushi, the leader of the shogi club. He decides that he will learn shogi and will wait until he can best Urushi at Shogi to confess, until then, he spends his time hanging out with Urushi, and saying flowery romantic phrases, now and then. Urushi consistently denies her feelings for Ayumu, when questioned by her friend. A simple romance plot, perhaps the strength does not lie in simplicity in this case, though. A mundane watch, but could be worse.

Tokyo Mew Mew New ♡

Tokyo Mew Mew New ♡

Tokyo mew mew new

As a long time fan of Tokyo mew mew, having read the manga and watched the anime in three part episode instalments on youtube in elementary school, I was excited to hear news of new Tokyo Mew Mew content. A remake, huh? I am usually less than excited for remakes, especially for series that I feel they did justice the first time around, and this is no exception. The opening theme is very 2000s shoujo magical girl anime, so in other words, it fits perfectly. With such familiarity with the original material, I found it strange to see the girls with smartphones, rather than flip phones, and seeing Aoyama in very modern streetwear attire was also very strange.

Tokyo mew mew new aoyama
He had me wanting a crossbody bag for at least a few weeks.

I hope these changes, meant to keep up with the times, will serve as a future time capsule for those watching in the future, just as elements of the original anime adaptation definitely capture the era. Something about the sequence of events at the beginning of the show felt off, but that could be because I’m more familiar with the manga than the 20xx anime; this adaptation could be pulling inspiration from that adaptation too, in addition to supposedly following the manga (it has, fairly closely, so far). The biggest injustice of this adaptation is it’s new art style. There are little signs of Mia Ikumi’s art style, which is a huge blow to the series, in my opinion. A modern adaptation of a show should not have to adhere to today’s modern bland anime art style.

I really enjoyed Kish, this time around. I think his voice actor is REALLY fitting in this adaptation and I am pretty sure that is why I am enjoying him so much. The plot and themes in Tokyo Mew Mew are really interesting in a bizarre sort of way. I assume there will only be twelve more episodes needed to adapt the rest of the story, and then it will be successfully remade. I hope they decide to adapt Tokyo mew mew a la mode. It would be really interesting to finally see an adaptation of that. Watching this remake has been a blast and has reminded me how crazy Tokyo Mew Mew is. Early this year, Mia Ikumi, artist of Tokyo Mew Mew, passed away. I hope that her works can continue to be appreciated for their unique charms, for many years to come. Rest in Peace.

Call of the Night

Call of the Night

Kou bragging

So this is by the creator of Dagashi Kashi, right? A vampire anime. A middle schooler can’t sleep so he stays up in the night, but becomes bored instead of just dissatisfied with school life. He comes across Nazuna-chan, a vampire who enjoys her time in the night. Jealous of Nazuna’s fun, Kou decides he wants to become a vampire, but finds out he will have to fall in love with a vampire, in order for that to happen. He tells Nazuna he will fall in love with her, but struggles along the way, while facing resistance from his concerned non-vampire friends and acquaintances.

At first, the show started off pretty weak, I felt, but halfway through I began to really appreciate watching Kou and his thoughts shared in conversations with the new people he came across. It was a really fun journey through the perspectives of others, the perspectives of people you may come across if you’re a fourteen-year-old who stays up all night hanging out with vampires.
